My wardrobe and me...A continuous battle
I've been going through an identity crisis. I've been putting it off for a while now, but I think I've got to come to terms with me and the bane of my existence - my clothes.
Flashback: Being a child of the 80's, I grew up watching The Cosby Show. Every Thursday night on NBC. I could relate to this show...Rudy was really only about a year older than me in the show, so we kinda grew up together.
I wanted to live in Brooklyn in a $3 million dollar Brownstone and have my dad as a doctor and my mom a lawyer. And on top of that, have dad's office to be right downstairs! I wanted to put on musical numbers for my grandparents and meet celebrities like Stevie Wonder and Placido Domingo. Ahhh, the perks of being a Cosby kid.
Anyway, so as a young child, I wanted to grow up to be like Clair Huxtable. Friendly, fun, fabulous all wrapped into one. She had the best jewelry and the best makeup and the best clothes. At least at the time (we're talking 80's styles here, okay?)
I told myself that once I was an adult I would dress like Clair Huxtable. That was just the epitome of what a working mother should look like and I should do that too.
Fast forward 27 years. Here I am. Fully into adulthood and barely into motherhood.
The problem is, I still dress like I'm in college. I'm a poster child for Old Navy. And that's on a good day.
So when do I need to give up my comfy, bland, boring clothes and move forward in my adulthood both inside AND out? Now? Later? Soon? When I join PTA? Is that when I get my Talbot's free pass?
What is the expectation of me as a mother? How do I need to dress? I want to look nice and presentable. But my selfish ways hinder me from buying all button down shirts and sweater sets.
I was watching an episode of The Cosby Show and it took place on a Saturday morning. Clair was wearing panty hose and slacks. Do I need to start doing that? Can I not wear pajama pants on Saturdays anymore now that I am a mother?
So that's my dilemma. I guess I've put my expectations too high. Maybe I should settle for Roseanne.
